USS Yorktown

The centerpiece of the Patriot's Point Naval & Maritime Museum, the USS Yorktown is an Essex-Class aircraft carrier that was in service from 1943 - 1970. Donated "as is" to the Patriot's Point Development Authority in 1975, the ship contained numerous legacy contaminants.

Governor Henry McMaster issued Executive Order 2022-20, which directs the South Carolina Office of Resilience (SCOR) to begin the process of removing hundreds of thousands of gallons of toxic pollutants from the USS Yorktown by commissioning an updated cost study for the project. Read the official press release.

Now, The South Carolina Office of Resilience—in partnership with Research Planning Inc, and HEPACO LLC—is removing these contaminants and thus eliminating the risks to nearby communities, economies, and ecosystems. Over 1 million gallons of contaminated water and heavy fuel oil have been removed to date!
