The South Carolina Office of Resilience (SCOR) paves the way toward a more resilient future with its Pathways to Hazard Resilience Events 

SCOR will host informational events in eleven areas across the Palmetto State where attendees can talk with representatives from local and regional agencies and organizations about strategies to implement resilience in their communities. These meetings will also provide an opportunity for attendees to meet SCOR staff and learn more about the history and mission of SCOR, and how the Resilience plan can assist local governments. 

Following the 2015 floods, the Disaster Recovery Office began as a temporary agency established to carry out housing recovery. After Hurricane Matthew in 2016, and Hurricane Florence in 2018, the South Carolina Office of Resilience (SCOR) officially began operation in July 2021.  

SCOR exists to lessen the impact of disasters on the communities and citizens of South Carolina by planning and coordinating statewide resilience, long-term recovery, and hazard mitigation.  

The Disaster Relief and Resilience Act (S.C. Code Ann. § 48-62-30 et seq.) directed SCOR to develop, implement, and maintain the Strategic Statewide Resilience and Risk Reduction Plan (Resilience Plan).  

On June 29, 2023, Governor Henry McMaster and Ben Duncan, SCOR’s Chief Resilience Officer unveiled the Resilience Plan. The Resilience Plan is intended to serve as a framework to guide investment in flood mitigation projects and the adoption of programs and policies to protect the people and property of South Carolina from the damage and destruction of extreme weather events. Broken down into 10 categories, the 54 recommendations range from data collection and outreach to infrastructure design, conservation, and a voluntary home buyout program.

Charleston: Monday, October 2nd, 2023, from 1:00-3:00pm at the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG) Barrett Lawrimore Conference Room.

Georgetown: Tuesday, October 10, 2023, from 1:00-3:00pm at The Baruch Institute for Marine & Coastal Sciences - Hobcaw Barony Kimbel Lodge.

Orangeburg: Thursday, October 19, 2023, from 1:00 pm-3:00pm at Claflin University’s Jonas T Kennedy Health and Wellness Complex (Tullis Arena) Training Center Room 114.

Gaffney: Monday, October 30, 2023, from 1:00-3:00pm at the Cherokee County Recreation Building.
